The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has replaced the old-style work permit with the new Tier 2 visa for skilled workers. The Tier 2 visa has much in common with the Tier 1 except that in order to apply for the Tier 2, you must already have an offer of employment, and your employer must be willing to sponsor you.

To be eligible for this visa you must have:
- UK degree-level qualification or
- UK Higher National Diploma relevant to the role on offer or
- UK Higher National Diploma not relevant to the role on offer with a minimum of 1 year full-time experience relevant to the role on offer or
- 3 years of specialized /senior experience gained from outside the UK in a position that is relevant to the role on offer.
You must also be able to prove that you are qualified for the role on offer. Your employer must be able to demonstrate that the role cannot be filled by a suitably qualified or experienced resident worker.
The following information concerns immigrating to the UK as a general skilled worker under a Tier 2 visa. To be successful in your application as a Tier 2 skilled worker, you will be required to score points from three sets of criteria:
- Attributes (sponsorship, qualifications, and future earnings)
- Maintenance (your ability to support yourself and any dependants
