UK Visa Dependent: Overview

Family members of migrants who are in the UK on Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 4 or Tier 5 of the points based system would be allowed to come to the UK by applying for a Dependent Visa UK. UK Dependant Visa is required for family members if they’re from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
A ‘dependant’ is any of the following:

  • spouse, unmarried partner or same-sex partner
  • child under 18
  • child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependant

UK Visa Dependent applying from outside the UK

If the dependants meet all the relevant UK Dependent Visa Requirements, then they would be required to apply online. And also would be required to have their fingerprints and photograph (known as ‘biometric information’) taken at a visa application centre as part of their application.

I want to know if the 6 month visa I got to UK can be renewed for 6 more months so I could visit in December
– Question asked in a forum

You need to apply for a fresh UK Visit Visa to travel in december.

UK Visa Dependent applying in the UK

  • In certain cases the dependents can apply to extend or switch their UK Dependant Visas to stay with the migrant if they’re already in the UK.
  • They should apply online on the official UK Government website.
  • Dependents can apply at the same time as the main applicant or at a later date by post, or in person at a premium service centre.
  • While applying for dependent visa it is not possible for the applicant to ‘switch’ the visa from within the UK, this means that Family members can’t apply in the UK as dependant if they hold a visitor visa and have entered the country on a visitor visa.
  • The applicants will be required to return to their home country to make a fresh application. The visa is granted for the same duration as the visa of the main applicant.
  • For dependant children All arrangements for children’s care and accommodation in the United Kingdom must comply with relevant United Kingdom legislation and regulations
  • For all UK Dependant Visa applications it is necessary to show that the applicant and the sponsor (main applicant, who is in the UK) will be able to support themselves without any recourse to public funds. This is also called the maintenance funds requirement.

I am an Indian and moving to UK on a Tier 2 visa sponsored by my company my husband wishes to visit me but he will be working from home for the job he already has in India, What are the visa options available to him
– General Question

Your husband can apply as a dependent of Tier 2 Migrant. He needs to show documents confirming maintenance funds requirements, relationship between you and your husband. He will get the visa for longer duration (depending on your visa expiry date). He can also apply for Visit Visa to meet you for a short duration (6 months). For visit visa, he is required to show documents confirming his travel back to India and sufficient funds in his name. However, he can only apply for 6 months.

I have UK dependant visa for 5 years I.E till 2023 and if I travel to India 2020 and I doN’T come back to UK within 6 months does it affect my visa extension process after 5 years I.E in 2023.
– General Question

Absences from UK will not automatically prejudice the extension process as long as you have a valid justification of the absence. It may however have an impact on your ILR application, i.e. permanent settlement in UK.
