Royal weddings are always the cause of every dreamer’s envy. Every child who grew up listening to fairy tales finds happiness in seeing a prince marry the woman of his dreams; a distant fulfillment of a childhood fantasy.

And why shouldn’t they be fascinated by these weddings? We are talking about handsome princes and beautiful princesses, coming together in a union of power, admiration and love. But here are a few things that you won’t find in your typical storybook wedding: Fiance visas for one, permanent residence applications, and tests.

Indeed, these are exactly a few of the things that Meghan Markle is going to have to face as part of her wedding story. She is due to be married to the Prince of England. The world watches in awe as their pictures appear across the tabloids around the world.

But when it comes to the United Kingdom, marrying the prince does not spare you the procedures. There are several steps that are expected of Meghan Markle when she is to join her future husband in living a fairy tale life…

If she decides to opt for the fairy tale wedding to get married in the UK and then stay back in the UK, then she will have to apply for fiance visa, which would allow her to enter the UK and continue to stay after the royal wedding. Once married, the Duchess of Sussex, as royal-watchers believe Ms. Markle will be known, may apply for leave to remain, and then, after about five years, permanent residence. For that she would have to pass a test on British life, which includes questions such as: “Who is Queen Elizabeth II married to?” Only then would she be eligible for citizenship—provided she is willing to swear allegiance to her new grandmother-in-law.

That being said, there are also several requirements that a British national and their spouse should be meeting in the first place BEFORE they can start with the immigration procedures, like a minimum earnings requirement on the sponsor’s part. But I guess it’s safe to say the Prince of Wales is in the clear when it comes to these. So Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s union might not be like a fairy tale, but it is definitely worth writing story books about.
